What Features Does an Online Store Need?
The essential store features — from search to WhatsApp order updates — and which ones actually earn their build cost.

On this page
Feature lists for online stores are endless. Nearly all of them are optional; a small set is essential.
The Non-Negotiables
- Clear product pages — big photos, price, stock status, delivery info, and a buy button that never moves.
- Search and sensible categories — customers who cannot find it, cannot buy it.
- Local payments — cards through a gateway, plus cash on delivery where that is how your market buys.
- Order notifications — you and the customer both need immediate confirmation; WhatsApp updates are expected in Sri Lanka.
- Mobile-first design — the majority of local purchases happen on phones.
High-Value Extras
- Related products — raises average order value almost for free
- Reviews — trust at the exact moment of decision
- Abandoned-cart messages — recover shoppers who left at payment
- Simple admin — updating stock and prices must take seconds, not support tickets
Nice to Have (Later)
Wishlists, loyalty points, discount engines, customer accounts. Each adds build cost and support surface — add them when data shows the demand.
What to Skip Entirely
Popups on load, forced account creation before checkout, and any feature that adds a step between product and payment. Every extra step taxes conversion.
The Test
Hand your phone to a friend and ask them to buy something. Every hesitation marks a missing feature or an extra step. That five-minute test beats most feature checklists.
