For many searches, a business's Google Business Profile is seen before its website — in Maps, in the side panel, in the map pack. It is free, and most businesses set it up badly.

Why It Matters

A complete profile shows your hours, photos, reviews, services and a direct call button — exactly what someone ready to buy needs. It also feeds local map-pack rankings.

Setup Done Right

  1. Claim and verify the listing (Google mails a code or calls).
  2. Choose the most precise category — "Web design service" beats "Company".
  3. Fill every field: services, area served, hours, WhatsApp number, website link.
  4. Add real photos: exterior, interior, team, work. Profiles with photos get far more engagement.
  5. Write a description that says what you do, for whom, and where — plain sentences, no keyword stuffing.

Ongoing Habits

  • Post updates — offers, new work, announcements keep the profile alive
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section before others fill it
  • Add products/services with prices where possible
  • Reply to every review — the reply is public marketing

Your profile should link to the right destination — usually the contact or booking page, not always the homepage. And your website should display the same name, address and phone number as the profile; consistency is a ranking signal.

Common Mistakes

  • Creating a duplicate listing instead of claiming the existing one
  • Keyword-stuffed business names (against the rules; risks suspension)
  • Setting an area as the address for a service-area business — use service areas instead
  • Letting hours go stale on holidays

Twenty minutes of setup and an hour a month of upkeep is all it takes to outperform most local competitors on this channel.
